Faro is a bit overlooked in the tourist brochures, this is actually a very charming city. Most in particular the area around the harbor and the old town are lovely to walk around. Furthermore it's also the largest city in the area with the best shopping opportunities. If you like big shopping centers then visit Forum Algarve which is most probably the biggest.

To see
Faro has much to offer the visitor, for both the Romans, Moors and Catholics have been here. The Moors were in 1249 ousted in Faro as the last place in the whole of Portugal.
Faro's cathedral
Today dominates the Catholic period Faro center, but Faros cathedral is actually built on top of a mosque, which in turn was originally built on top of a Roman building. The cathedral is quite distinctive from the outside, but its interior is interesting - especially chapel is very well maintained.
Nossa Senhora do Carmo - Faros golden church
Faro has many churches, but Nossa Senhora do Carmo distinguished by its inventory, which is largely covered with gold. The church has been nicknamed 'the golden church'.
Faros Capela de Ossos - bone chapel
The church offers more than gold, because behind it in the chapel, anyone with a penchant for the macabre enjoy a special experience. Chapel walls is in fact made up of skeletons and skulls from more than 1,000 monks.
The beach at Faro
Paria de Faro is a long, sandy beach, located a few kilometers from the center of Faro. It offers it all, but if you want things a little more for themselves, there are also plenty of small beaches around the small islands situated around the river Formosa estuary at Faro.
Landmarks around Faro
In the immediate vicinity of Faro is the village of Estoi that still has a more rustic and original Portuguese atmosphere than the more touristy resorts nearby. The village's main attraction is a pink palace, Visconde de Estoi, with some very nice and well-maintained gardens.
